Ace: Fine. Sister decided to invite a friend and hook me up. Don’t think she’ll b doing that again. If she knows what’s good 4 her. GTG. First real flight today.

What did that mean exactly? Was he blowing me off? Giving me some sort of half-assed excuse? There was no LOL, no emojis that might give me some clue to his mood. It was all cut and dry. This was what happened, this was what won’t happen in the future, goodbye. Not even a talk soon. In a way, it completely took the wind out of my sails, and I responded with something generic.

I tried to leave it alone, to forget about it, but as the day wore on, it became harder to do. I wanted to dissect the message and ask Dillon or Terry what they thought of it, but I couldn’t. They didn’t know I’d planned on reaching out to him, and after all of my arguments about how much he annoyed me, I didn’t want to see that expression on their faces. Curious and smug, or pitiful and concerned. They’d been protective of me ever since Trip, and I loved them for it. I’d basked behind their shields, hiding away, throwing a pity party for one. And they’d allowed it and, to a point, encouraged it.

On the flip side, others weren’t as guarded. I wasn’t an idiot. When Trip rejected me, I lost a lot of friends. People who acted like they supported me brought the claws out when I was left standing alone, watching Trip’s broad frame walk away. I heard, “I knew Trip couldn’t be the father, and she was just trying to trap him. I’m so glad he didn’t fall for that bullshit.” Others said, “I bet she doesn’t know who the father is because there are too many men.” One of my former closest friends told a few flight attendants, “She only wanted Trip for his money, and she was willing to do anything to get it. But Trip was too smart for her. Did she really think he wouldn’t want a paternity test? Serves her right that he is with someone else now.” It hurt. Hearing the vitriol coming from people who I thought had my back hurt worse than being turned down.

The people I worked with weren’t the only ones to discuss how they felt about my situation, either. I’d heard Frank and Maurine say things. Maurine’s friend Shelby was one of the worst offenders. They thought I only wanted to find a husband, and once I set my sights on Trip, that was it. Nothing could sway me. The worst part of it was they were right. Trip had been in that captain’s chair for a while. He was solid, secure, had money, and I’d firmly believed that while he didn’t love me, the baby would tie us together, and eventually, he would grow to love me.

When I first heard my so-called friends talking about me behind my back, I tried to defend myself, but that only threw me into a bigger hole.
